Types of Cooling Systems

Room Air Conditioners

Room or window air conditioners cool individual rooms, not your entire home, and are less expensive than central air-conditioning units. You can choose either a window unit or a portable air conditioner.

Central Air Conditioners

Central air conditioners circulate cool air using ducts and registers, providing even distribution throughout the home. A central air conditioner can last up to 20 years with proper maintenance, is more energy-efficient than a room air conditioner and is cost-effective if your home already has duct work.

Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners

These systems could be good options for room additions and small apartments, where installing ductwork isn’t feasible. The indoor air handlers are small and can be mounted on the ceiling or hung on a wall. They cost more than other cooling systems but are typically less expensive to maintain.

High-efficiency air conditioners

You can reduce energy use by 20 to 50 percent by switching to a high-efficiency air conditioner and taking other steps to lower cooling costs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

If your air conditioner is at least 10 years old, you might want to consider replacing it with a newer model that’s more efficient. Central air conditioners are rated according to their seasonal efficiency ratio (SEER) – and the higher, the better. The most efficient systems typically range from 13 to 22. You also should look for a system that has a government-approved Energy Star rating.

Other features to consider:

  • Thermal expansion valve and high-temperature rating greater than 11.6
  • Variable speed air handler for new ventilation systems
  • Quiet unit
  • Fan-only switch
  • Filter check light
  • Automatic-delay fan switch

At Air Services, we can help identify the best cooling solution for your home. We are an independent Trane Comfort Specialist. How to Improve Cooling Efficiency

In addition to installing a high-efficiency air conditioner, here are other steps to take to save on cooling costs:

  • Make sure your attic is properly ventilated
  • Draw blinds or drapes to block the sunlight during the hottest part of the day
  • Set your ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise
  • Use your grill and cook outside as much as possible
  • Insulate and seal ducts to prevent air loss through your ductwork
  • Set your programmable thermostat to a higher setpoint when you’re away from home
  • Clean or replace filters as recommended
